Why AI Text Contains Invisible Watermarks

Text copied out of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar AI tools sometimes carries invisible Unicode characters that are not visible to the human eye but can be detected by specialized software.

These characters include zero-width spaces (U+200B), zero-width joiners (U+200C, U+200D), word joiners (U+2060), and other invisible markers. When they appear in a consistent pattern, they can serve as an observable marker that text passed through a particular tool, though this isn't something every provider documents or confirms.

Whatever their origin, these invisible characters cause real problems: they break code, corrupt search and find-and-replace, throw off character counts, and leak into documents where they create formatting and copy-paste glitches. To be clear, they have no bearing on AI-writing detectors like Turnitin or GPTZero; those tools analyse your visible writing, not hidden Unicode.

Why Invisible Characters Cause Problems

AI-writing detectors like Turnitin, GPTZero, Originality.ai and Copyleaks analyse the visible writing, statistical patterns in word choice and sentence rhythm. They do not scan for invisible Unicode characters, so removing those characters has no effect on an AI-detection result. The real problems these hidden characters cause are practical ones.

When you copy text from ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools, the invisible characters come with it. Most text editors don't display them, so you have no idea they're there, until they break a code snippet, corrupt a find-and-replace, inflate a character count, or trigger odd line breaks and spacing when pasted into a document or CMS.

Our tool specifically targets and removes these invisible characters, cleaning up your formatting, your code, and your documents, and stripping out hidden markers you may not want travelling with text you share.

How the Free Tool Works Internally

When you paste text into our tool, it scans every character looking for Unicode code points that are commonly used for watermarking. This includes characters like U+200B (zero-width space), U+200C (zero-width non-joiner), U+200D (zero-width joiner), U+2060 (word joiner), U+FEFF (byte order mark), and U+00AD (soft hyphen).

The tool then creates a clean version of your text with all these watermark characters removed. Your visible content remains exactly the same - only the invisible markers are stripped out.

All processing happens entirely in your web browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, is never transmitted over the internet, and is never stored anywhere. This ensures complete privacy.

We scan for the invisible zero-width and control characters on our scan list: zero-width spaces (U+200B), zero-width joiners (U+200C, U+200D), word joiners (U+2060), byte order marks (U+FEFF), soft hyphens (U+00AD), and other invisible markers that turn up in AI-generated text.

No account needed. Just paste your text and click clean. No email, no password, no personal information required for the free tier.

Completely private. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to servers, stored, or logged. We have zero access to what you paste.

Yes, it works on text from any source. It finds and removes invisible Unicode characters. It does not affect watermarks embedded in a model's word choices, such as Google's SynthID, or Anthropic's embedded watermark in models launched on or after 2 August 2026.

No. We only remove invisible Unicode characters. Your visible text, formatting, spacing, punctuation, and content remain 100% unchanged.

The limit allows us to offer the tool completely free while maintaining service quality. For most quick cleaning tasks, 500 characters is sufficient. Premium offers unlimited characters.

No. Detectors like Turnitin and GPTZero analyse your visible writing, patterns in word choice and sentence rhythm, not invisible Unicode characters. Cleaning those characters fixes formatting, code and document issues; it does not change an AI-detection result. Always use AI-assisted content honestly and cite it properly.

Our tool removes technical markers, not the responsibility to cite sources. We encourage ethical use according to your institution's AI policy. Always properly cite AI-assisted content.
